Consistency is the key to success
      Career-wise Strategy Consistency
Typically the overall mark to graduate with a First is 70%, so it therefore follows that if a student gained 70% in every assessment they would graduate with a First. However, this hypothetical example does not represent any student - in reality a good student's assessments can be marked anywhere between 60% upwards and even the author did not achieve over 70% in every assessment.

Every student has strong and not so strong subjects; some students are weak in certain subjects. This was no different for the author - the weaker subjects were overcome and a First achieved. He explains, "In the third year I had one subject I had difficulties with and yet when the only assignment was marked I achieved 70%. It then transpired that this assignment was the highest marked in the class. The subject's exam sitting played out in much the same way. The odd thing was other students in the class were more adept at the subject than I was, they just weren't organised..."

In reality, students need to be fetching over 70% in the majority of subject assessments; this then balances out the minority when assessments yield lower marks. This is where the strategy comes into play to ensure the balancing-out effect kicks in.

The graduate board have done an outstanding
job in devising the marking scheme of degrees

It is interesting to note that the first year of a degree is not counted towards the final grade and the second year is typically factored to 30% contribution.

The degree marking model is top heavy with the final year weighing in at 70%, meaning a student who takes action in their first or second year can alter their degree path towards graduating with a First. Even if a student in the third year begins applying the knowledge it can change their predicted grade to the next level - therefore a projected 2:2 student could graduate with a 2:1 and a projected 2:1 student can achieve a First if the knowledge is applied in time for that moment to prove pivotal.
